Monterey & Carmel

Hi, everyone! Today, I wanna introduce an amazing driving course near San Francisco. I can call this trip the best drive in San Francisco. Fantastic, amazing, awesome, marvelous, cool, romantic, tremendous, Wow, I tried to list proper words to describe, but there' be no end to do it.

Then, Let's go to this amazing world in San Francisco!

If u r planning a Monterey trip, I would recommend to combine Monterey & Carmel, surely including 17 Mile Drive. It's possible to look around most of them but if u wanna take more ur time, it would be also a good way to stay 1 Day or more. On your trip, you'll enjoy amazing coastal views while driving along Highway1, passing by Half Moon Bay and Santa Cruz to Monterey Bay

1. Monterey

Recommended Itinerary

Some of my friends told me they were disappointed about a trip to Monterey & Carmel which was less than they expected. However, I heard a lot about this destination from my Korean travel guidebook and also when I worked at the tour company in SF, Monterey & Carmel trip is one of the bestselling tour of them. Thus, I decided to go there just once in my life without much expectation.

When I arrived at the Old Fisherman's Wharf in Monterey, that's WOW!!!! Amazing itself!!! Views, atmosphere, people, a lot of seafood(But, we didn't eat seafood u.u;;)..... Paradise here!!!

* Old Fisherman's Wharf

In SF city, there is a Fisherman's Wharf area and I went there almost 100 times because my working place was near Fisherman's Wharf area in the city. BUT, the atmosphere of the old Fisherman's Wharf in Monterey is totally different than that of San Francisco city. Smaller but Looks more friendly, chilling cafes, Nice seafood and different styles of Clam Chowder(U can try lots of sample Clam chowder from many restaurant! Also, they have *Happy hours), Gift shops for a souvenir(For me, Always postcards!!yay) Whale watching tour, wonderful historic places, Music, wow, amazing as it is with amazing views. In addition, U can see see lions at the pier and take a picture with them.

What I do like is Monterey had California's first theater, public building, public library, publicly funded school, printing press, and newspaper. The city and surrounding area have attracted artists since the late 19th century and many celebrated painters and writers have lived there.

Discover the history and culture of the Monterey Bay on this monterey trip!

** Cannery Row & Aquarium

Actually, we didn't have much time to stay here so we just passed by the Cannery Row and Aquarium. If I had more time, definitely I would go there. But It looks like a coooool place to look around and see sea lions!

Cannery Row itself is now a tourist attraction with many restaurants and hotels, many of which are located in former cannery buildings, and a few historic attractions. Some privately owned fishing companies still exist on Cannery Row, housed on piers located a short distance from the historic district frequented by tourists(Refer to Wikipedia)

In recent years, Cannery Row has become increasingly popular  among sport fisherman due to extensive public fishing facilities; popular spots for kayak-launching and scuba-diving spots.

2. 17 Mile Drive

17 Mile Drive is widely recognized as one of the most scenic drives in the world. The famous coastal landmark runs through Pacific Grove to Pebble Beach, from the dramatic Pacific coastline to the majestic Del Monte Forest.

There are a lot of amazing views on this road. Everywhere could be the best place for your memorable photo. It reminded me of driving my country's coastline in my hometown. I could make a wondrous journey with ur friend, family, boyfriend or girlfriend. Especially for a couple, It would be one of the best place to date.

*Note : At the entrance to 17 Mile Drive, it costs $10. But, it's worth it!!!!!!! BUT, motorcycles are prohibited entry onto 17 Mile Drive. Plus, this Drive is way shorter than I thought!! Keep that in mind:)

* Recommended course : Enter the Pacific Grove entrance and find the Exit, Carmel exit, then u can enjoy most of scenic places.

Marvel at nature's treasures found along 17-Mile Drive including the Lone Cypress tree(The Lone Cypress has prevailed on its rocky perch for over 250 years) and scenic outlook points of the Pacific Ocean- one of California's best-known landmarks. Also, Pebble beach golf course, Bird Rock, Ghost tree.. U should stop by there!! but I couldn't stop by all because we couldn't find any parking space...u.u;;; But, we had really great time for sure^^;;

3. Carmel

Carmel Beach

Known for its natural scenery and rich artistic history, Carmel is a small city in Monterey county. We went to the Carmel beach to enjoy the sunset at the beach. It's always marvelous and romantic to watch the sunset by the beach. A lot of people was having a bonfire and enjoyed time with their companies. I was so envy them to have a bonfire on the beach. It reminded me of camping memories when I was a child! <3 Near the ocean, there are lots of picturesque houses looking like there would be in a novel. I love them!!!!!

Bonfire

If you drive a little bit more, u can reach to the Ocean ave where u can walk around and drop by many pretty shops, restaurants, cafes etc in a town(They r really beautiful enough!!!!!!!). Pretty long, beautiful avenue that You will love! Here America, the Christmas is a Big Holiday for them so they r also preparing for the Christmas.

Smart Shopping in SF - Good bargain stores

Last time, we studied about the shopping area in SF.
The reason why I'm posting about a shopping is holiday season is coming again. We just passed the black Friday last week. But, from Black friday until Christmas, they always make a good deal:)

If u have a shopping knowhow, U would be much happier with bargains!!

This time, I am gonna share with you guys about the way of smart shopping in SF, Good bargain stores.
R u excited? GOGOGO, yay yay!!

1.  Ross

If you have been to the USA, I think there is no one who doesn't know this store. It is a chain of American off-price department stores and the third of largest off-price retailer in the United States.

Ross has almost everything so It is really useful for you to get daily necessities especially when you move to San Francisco at first and buy stuffs like a blanket, covers, pillows, body showers, socks, shoes, bag, carrier etc with a super reasonable price. Of course, they are not new products but pretty good with that beautiful price. They cannot treat all the brands but sometimes u can get a good renowned brand product like Michael Kors. Also, body shower, branded shampoo and leave-in conditioner, body butter, lip treatment(Burt's bee) are being sold here. Way cheaper than Korea, right?

But, I cannot find any good clothing there. It doesn't look like a good quality so I don't buy clothing there except some sportswear. I don't recommend clothes much from there but sometimes they have designer section which offers a little better quality than others with good prices.

** Recommended Items: Sportswear, Daily necessities(Linens, pillow, shampoo&conditioner, body shower, body lotion, hand cream, socks..) shoes, bags, Carrier, iPhone accessories and an earphone, cups, coffee, watch, sunglasses(not the section with a lot of sunglasses, but small rack where you should ask worker for a try), Hair dryer and iron etc.

The locations in SF city

2. Marshalls

Pretty the same concept to Ross. However, U have more options than before now. I haven't bought much from here but it's pretty good. U can compare between them but personally I prefer Ross more. It's not far from the Ross just a block away so that you could check them too at once.

Location

3. Loehmann's, Shoes &Bag

I think u guys don't know much about this store. For international students or someone who just got here, it would be a new great news !!

Located in Financial district, it is best known for its "Back Room,"where women interested in fashion can find designer clothes at prices lower than in department or specialty stores. In recent years, they have expanded its offerings to include shoes, accessories, and men's products.

I compared Loehmann's to Marshall and Ross. In my opinion, Accessories(They even have Swarovski),bags(Branded bags),shoes and Hair Products(Here is the best!) are better than them but it's hard to get a good clothes. But, at least better than Ross and Marshall regarding clothes.

Another good thing here is they have different kinds of bargains during holiday seasons. For example, all goods were marked down by 40% from already discounted prices on Black Friday even though Ross didn't have many good deals on that day. They are preparing another good deals from Nov 8th through Nov 12th that you can check them if you need something. Unfortunately, they don't sell daily necessities at all.

** Hours

M-F, 9 - 8
Sat 9:30 - 8
Sun 11 - 7

*Plus!! If you create a gold membership card($25), U can get a 10% discount whenever u purchase something. If you stay here for a while, I would recommend to make one and pay them off enough.

*One more Tip! You can read fashion magazines for free for 3 months as a trial. After 3 months, u can cancel them so U can make the most of it. I will have to cancel them soon haha:)

Location

4. DSW, Footwear retailer

This is a speciality branded footwear retailer, headquartered in Columbus, Ohio. There are lots of different shoes like high heels, flat shoes, boots and bags etc. Better quality than Ross and other shops because they are only focusing on footwear products. It is located nearby Union Square so u cannot miss it.

5.  Payless - shoesource

I don't go much because I couldn't find any fancy style from here but if you need just cheaper one, then go for it. It's really cheap and basic style is fine to wear in normal days. Sometimes, they also offer a good deal and you can buy 1 and get 1 for free. Pretty good deal. Located at the Powell station.

6. T.J.Maxx

It was a lunch break time when I found this store. At that time, I have no idea about this store but I realized soon this store looked like Ross, something like that. They offer designer and brand name fashion for women, men, teens, kids and baby for up to 60% off department store prices everyday. Something is a little more expensive than Ross but depends on products. I heard someone found branded heels cheaper than outlet from here. I know it's a little bit tired but, If u go and compare more and more, U can be a wise purchaser;)

7. Burlington Coat factory

On the way back home, Sometimes I walked down the street to the Market street for shopping. I was curious what it is so went inside. It looked like a warehouse and is offering good deals. Personally, I don't like clothes from this kinda off-price department because I can't find any stylish one. But, basic branded items are always good with this price. Here I think home decor and especially Travel luggage is really good with nice design and brand with a reasonable price. Before leaving from the USA, if you need a luggage, go to this place. A little bit cheaper than Ross.

*Product :  Luggage, Coats, outerwear, apparel, shoes, accessories, baby clothes, furniture, home decor items, and gifts

Location

8. DAISO

One in Japantown

One in downtown

I don't need to explain DAISO cuz I think everyone knows it well. Almost all items are $1.50. One is located in Japnatown, larger than one in downtown. They also sell snacks like Pocky(빼빼로), 칸쵸(i don't know English name;;). I like their false eyelashes! In this field, beauty area, Japan has a lot of interesting stuffs and they are really specialized in this beauty industry. They have many different kinds of false eyelashes hahahaha:) That might make u a different person^^*

Pretty done with introducing off-price department stores. How was it? New information for you? That's good to share with you guys. Maybe not many students don't know much or have never heard. It doesn't matter because Now! U start to know them. SO,

Let's be a wise customer together!!! Welcome!!!
